2002 V70XC rough idle and occasional stalling. MAF?

Post by Marcobrick »

Hi all, I am hoping a knowledgeable P2 expert can help me as I am P80 owner and have never worked on the newer cars.
My friend's V70XC which has a build date of Aug 2001 has an idle/stall issue. I went to check it out and thought immediately 2001 V70= ETM problem. However it appears to be a 2002 model according to the vin and it does carry the later style BOSCH ETM.

Mostly it runs just fine. Occasionally when idling, it starts to stutter, and sometimes as a result it stalls. It always starts straight up again. On the highway it drives just fine.

I have an Innova 3130 scan tool with live data, so I plugged it in and got one code, relating to "post cat fuel trim too rich. I suspect this was triggered by the idle surging and stalling and not the cause of it. I erased the code and it has not returned.

I have been closely watching TPS and MAF values with the car idling. The TPS is steady at 3.9% idling at normal temp. The Mass airflow sits around 4.5 g/s When the car splutters, I couldn't see those values spike but I could see ignition timing retard rapidly to try and save it. While manoeuvring in Drive at idle, I saw the MAF very briefly spike to 14g/s but it was very momentary. This coincided with a minor stumble.

I am beginning to suspect the MAF sensor but would value some input from experienced wrenchers. I understand ETM failure of the later type is not nearly as common as the 99-01 models. I would love to help my friend get his car running right again and I don't want to spend a lot of his money replacing the wrong parts. His regular mechanic has already misdiagnosed an oil leak which I found in two minutes, and does not seem to know much about Volvos. I should also add there is no dealer in town and no one I know of with VIDA or Dice.
