1996 Volvo 850 GLT. A/C Compressor clutch shim

Post by Redneck »

Hi Guys,

I have taken apart my car again (1996 Volvo 850 GLT). I am trying to find an AC compressor clutch shim to buy. My current clutch gap is 0.95 mm. My existing shims are: 0.8 mm and 0.3 mm. It is a bummer because If I remove 0.3mm shim, I go down to 0.65 mm gap which is right above the max tolerance 0.6mm. If I remove 0.8mm shim, I go down to 0.15 mm gap which is way below the min tolerance 0.3mm.

Did anyone a leave small gap of around 0.15mm and the AC compressor still worked without a problem? My clutch gap is uniform and the clutch is not bent. I used a special tool to remove it without bending. I wonder if 0.15 mm gap would still work since my gap is uniform and the clutch would be at a small distance from the pulley without contact preventing it from spinning when the electromagnet is not engaged.

0.5mm shim would make my gap perfect at 0.35mm. I don't want to settle for 0.65mm gap after all the work to make the adjustment.

I have two questions:
1. Does anyone know where to buy 0.5mm shim for Zexel clutch A/C compressor?
2. Did anyone make the gap small at around 0.15mm and the compressor still worked fine?

Thank you.

Just set it at 0.15mm, check for uniformity, and forget about it. As long as it isn't touching with the AC off, it will be fine.
