1994 850 Random no start due to flooding

Post by petek153 »

Have a 94 850 Volvo and have determined that if you don't let it run to at least warm and shut it down on occasion it floods out on the next start. The only way I have found to recover is crank the heck out of it or pull the plugs and throw a dry set in then it starts right up. We bought this used and looking at all the records it has happened to the previous owner too where he had it towed to dealer .They replaced the plugs and check system but never found anything with it.. Has anyone else experienced this or any Ideas as to why this happens ?

It might be either a leaky injector or a bad fuel pressure regulator. The latter tends to make the car run very rich (black smoke) when the engine is running since the diaphragm ruptures and allows raw gas to get sucked into the intake manifold.

If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge you can watch the fuel pressure after the engine is shut off. If it bleeds off to zero within a few minutes there is a leak.

What kind of plugs, wires, cap, and rotor are on the car? Also, you may want to do a compression test. If the motor is warn, it may be causing that problem. What weight oil are you running?

Car runs good no black smoke starts the best out of the three 850's I have it's done this fail to start on 3 occasions within the past year seems like if it was the fuel pressure regulator or injector it would be more often.

The basic minimum you should do for a car this age/mileage and with symptoms of flooding:

* Replace the FPR, at 20 years, it is probably long gone. About $50 for the Bosch type.

* Remove the fuel injectors and clean them. You can send them for professional cleaning or clean them at home using ghetto method. Your choice.

* The do a complete tuneup:
- Spark Plugs (I use NGK Iridium)
- Cap Rotor: Bosch only
- Wire: Bougicord only.

Hello there!
I'm having the same issue, did you ever found out what was causing it?

This thread is pretty old, dating back to 2014. I'd recommend creating a new post with more specific information about your car and the symptoms you're experiencing. There are many gurus on this site who will be able to help you.
