I have a 2004 xc90. This car is is new to me. the awd does not appear to be working. I have read many post but I am unclear where to start to diagnose the problem. I climed under the car and checked the dem. It appears to be plugged in. The driveshaft rotates with no resistance when I turn it by hand. Is that normal? Where should I proceed? DEM,angle gear, splines, etc. Help on where to start.
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris, welcome to the boards. I have an 03 with the same problem. You have a couple options. The dealer will tell you that you need a new angle gear after diagnosing, I was told they always replace the angle gear and not just the sleeve. If you are mechanically inclined and normally fix your own cars then you should be able to handle this job yourself. Personally i think the sleeve could be replaced and fix the problem in a lot of these cases without having to replace the angle gear too. There are plenty of posts on this board that cover the job. The other option is to drive the car as it is AKA front wheel drive. That's what i'm doing at the moment. I'm sure other people will chime in sooner than later with additional info as well. Good luck with it whichever route you choose and be sure to let us know how you make out.
