2003 xc90 t6 axle keeps going bad

Hey there fellas,

I am here to get some suggestions regarding myother's volvo. She has a 2003 xc90 t6. The right (passenger) front axle has gone bad 4 time now. Usually on sustained highway trips 65+mph. The last axle held up for over 3 years until a 3+ hour road trip. It presents itself with violent shaking and usually axle grease flinging everywhere.

Seems as if there is an underlying issue here. The ball joint on that side looks a bit worn, but on smooth interstate roads with random axle failure, I can't see how that would have an impact on the axle.

Any ideas?

They are currently stranded in Utah. California to Colorado trip isn't going to plan.

The stub axle has splines that fit into the hub bearing at the wheel, the mating splines in the hub may have stripped. And because you have a T6 you may have the same problem with the splines on the output shaft on the transmission. Look for missing out flattened splines on the inside of the inner CV joint. Just another in the long list of issues of the 4T65E trans in the T6 XC90's.
