2002 S60 CV joint, axle, bearing issue after LCA, BJ replace

Post by zmf »

Hey - I just (mostly) replaced the control arms, ball joints and struts and am having trouble getting everything back together. I did not remove the axle bolt since the instructions I read before I started suggested this was unnecessary. In wrestling with the strut removal, I'm pretty sure I pulled something out of place. My left wheel is pointed straight ahead, as it should. The right wheel is turning to the right, and I can't push it back straight enough to even get the control arm lined up with the ball joint. Never mind that it obviously won't drive very well like it is.

I've tried slowly turning the axle and pushing in, but that doesn't seem to be doing it. Do I need to take off a CV boot an visually align something? Inner or outer more likely? Something else? The threads I've found related to this don't go into detail suggesting it's not complicated, maybe I just need more patience?

Check if CV joints are in place.

I first bolt on ball joint to wheel hub and then compress spring (strut assembly is bolted at this point) a bit to make it possible to align it with holes in strut. Volvo says to push control arm down, but for me it's easier to compress spring.

So I tried again today and it seemed to work. After some time I finally found a spot where the hub would push back in towards the tranny. Now both wheels are straight ahead and I was able to mount everything back up. I guess I just wasn't patient enough trying to get the hub back in line. A few test trips around the block and everything seems ok. My ball joints still aren't fully seated properly - I was hoping a short test drive would help that - so I'll have to try again to get them properly in place.
