I was just wondering if many people have changed the valve cover gasket (Camshaft cover, rocker cover) on a D5.
I have been working over my engine gradually for a few months fixing a multitude of leaks and yet despite many definite fixes more oil keeps appearing on the bottom of the sump after a run.
I changed the timing belt and at the same did the oil pump O ring and gasket as well as the crankshaft oil seal. This had leaked so badly that it had contaminated and destroyed an engine mount but this is all now perfect.
I fixed the sump plug leak with an oil and filter change.
I changed the oil cap gasket.
I fixed steering oil leaks but still there was something.
The other night in frustration I got so determined that I ran the engine in my garage with lots of inspection lamps rigged up and kept moving myself around the engine with a rag and an inspection mirror. There was no way I was going in for dinner until I knew where oil was coming from!
Long story short oil is leaking from the cam cover at the back of the engine at the timing belt end. I assume then that it is finding its way down to the sump with gravity. It is actually a fairly big leak in that if I wipe it more oil appears within a minute or so.
I thought this was great news until I read up on changing the gasket and found that as it involves removing the injectors, all fuel lines must be replaced etc. This is a 10 year old car. I like to think that I could remove the fuel lines and refit them without having to buy new ones, obviously checking carefully for any leaks. I have 4 children I would rather spend my money on.
Does anyone have any experience of this job/ advice they would like to share as I planning on doing this soon as well as a droning rear wheel bearing and still the alarm siren message that I will sort out one day.
