1996 Volvo GLT Torque specification for alternator pulley

Post by Redneck »

Does anyone know the correct torque specification for alternator pulley nut from a reliable source? I can't find this information anywhere.

My alternator is: Bosch 0 123 505 014. It is in Volvo 850 1996 GLT.

Thank you.

The alternator should not have a "pulley". The mounting bolts likely have a torque value of about 18 FT LBs. As I have been following torque values, it seems that they are generally as follows:

10 mm bolts = 8 to 15 ft lbs.
12 mm bolts = 18 to 25 ft lbs.
14 mm bolts = 35 to 38 ft lbs.
16 mm bolts = 35 to 45 ft lbs.
18 mm bolts = 55 to 65 ft lbs.

I'm sure others will have strong opinions as well.

The serpentine belt goes around the alternator pulley. The pulley is attached to the alternator shaft. The nut is 24mm, bolt/shaft is 16mm.

The torque specs that rspi quotes are for a specific type of steel (assuming that the numbers are taken from some table which I doubt). The standard torque specifications differ depending on how soft the steel is. In order to rely on such standard information, we would first need to know what type of steel the alternator shaft and nut are made of.

The only thing that prevents the pulley from spinning freely is friction between the pulley, the shim and the washer with nut on top. There are no splines. Therefore, It is important that the pulley nut is tightened as hard as possible without damaging the thread in order to increase friction.

In the BMW world, the Bosch alternator center bolt torque is about 44 ft*lb (70 Nm).
