I was looking at the turbo in my 95 last night. I have been doing a thorough walk through after the passenger side axle broke. In looking in the cold air discharge I noticed oil pooled in the turbo.
I did a PCV replacement a couple of months ago when I was getting positive pressure out of the dipstick. The PTC nipple was pretty dirty when I looked at it last night. I have cleaned it. My question is if this is a normal amount to see? Should I just suck it out and see if it comes back, or should I bite the bullet and do a rebuild?

Not sure what I'm looking at in the photo. Is that the turbo pipe that goes over the engine?
Wiggle the compressor wheel with your fingers. Is there any play in the shaft? Also, do you notice smoke in the rearview mirror on hard acceleration?

You are looking down into the turbo from where the over the engine pipe attaches. I had a smoking issue previously, but it smelled more like coolant than burning oil and had stopped before the axle incident. When it was smoking I checked and there was no noticeable shaft play. My son is itching to get the car back so I will probably suck out that oil and check it in a week and see where we are at. I have another turbo that I can rebuild so I might just do that to be safe.

How many miles on the car? If the ptc was clogged it will cause car to have positive crank pressure. Also when the pcv was replaced, was the pipe from the front of the block to the oil pan cleaned? If not these can clog or partially clog causing crankcase pressure. When you replaced the pcv, did you replace all the pipes?
I've always had some oil in the turbo area. Unless it is excessively smokey and there is little impeller movement I wouldn't worry about this for now. I'd say the amount of oil you are seeing is fairly normal for an older turbo.
Neil.
