95 940 multi-symptom no-start

Post by snowing »

Hello -

I've got a 95 940, ca. 190k miles. The car does run great, and has run great. Except when it doesn't run at all, which happened for the first time starting about a week ago.

There have now been two incidents. The first came about a week ago I went into the car (after the first very cold night of the year) and it wouldn't start. It cranked plenty, but no ignition. The battery was old, and eventually, after enough cranking, the battery died completely. Started up instantly with a jump start, and a new battery solved the problem for a week. But now the same thing is happening, and this time a jump start won't help, as it just cranks and cranks, but won't fire.

To add to the confusion, my relays are configured in such a way that I can't find my fuel pump relay. I've found a few others online who have had the same problem in their 95s, but can't find the solution. The relay is MIA. If I look on the relay board behind the dash, there's simply an empty socket where it should be.

I can't tell if the first situation, where the battery was bad and a jump got it going, was just a red herring, and unrelated to this problem. It seems like a pretty big coincidence, though.

Any ideas?

P.s. sorry for any cross-posting.

Question - When key is switched to on position, can you hear fuel pump running?

That relay was changed. It is no longer the rectangular dual relay pictured. It is the second from right on the row immediately behind fuses behind ashtray.

Also a dirty throttle will make that not start cold if the idle switch doesn't close.

Do you know if it has spark? fuel pump relay and idle switch will not cause no spark.

Fuel pressure regulator, not fuel relay.
