Hello all. I am new to this site, and new to Volvo ownership. I will likely reveal my ignorance many times over, so please be patient with me.
Hard shift from 1-2 -- huge clunk. I check the kick down cable and it is way off spec. With the throttle peddle depressed (full throttle) I adjust the cable to spec (~2.0"). Drive off, no more hard shift. But, the cable has what seems to be an excessive amount of slack in it. I am not sure that it would ever fall off the throttle pulley. Yet, I am concerned with the slack. Please advise. I am sure I missed something along the way.

Thanks for the link. Coupled with my Haynes manual (it arrived in the mail a few days after I posted the question) I was able to get the kick down cable adjusted properly.
