Volvo Repair Database 2001 V70XC - Brake Pedal Sensor Replacement

Post by xHeart »

What would be the casualty of a failed brake pedal sensor.
It is showing up in ECM trouble codes.
It is a daily driver in rough winter.
Should I replace it with Volvo part number 9441116 for $92?

The cruise control will cease to work as that part's major role is to assure cruise will still go off with brake if the brake light switch fails.

Pump brakes until pedal is hard to dump booster vacuum or the or ring on sensor will get sucked inside booster as you pull it out.

I repaired mine on the 01 XC70 as it's the same design as the sensor on the 850 and I used a write-up on Swedespeed that covered the track repair. Takes about an hour to do including disassembly.

What's the repair Mike, is it just cleaning and lube, did you replace anything?

You open the top of the crimped body and slide out the circuit board.

Where the connector joins the circuit board are two large solder points. The wires have usually detached from these solder points. Just retouch them with a solder gun and reseal the crimp. I used a sealant to replace the factory sealant around the crimp.

It's just a sliding potentiometer track with no components that I recall.

To remove pump the pedal to get rid of vacuum with engine off to avoid sucking the o ring back into the booster (ask me how I know) and then clean around the base of the switch with a tooth brush to reveal the steel spring clip. Once clean flick the steel clip away and pull out the sensor.

If you have a new one pop it in making sure the o ring is seated correctly.
Two questions:
1) does the o-ring slide right out with sensor, like the o-ring over the heater exchange hose?
2) where would o-ring seat correctly at install -- does it go over the sensor tube?

The o ring is on the body of the sensor. When the sensor is removed it usually stays on it but with age it might stay in booster hole. Going back in: just fit it on the end of the sensor and insert sensor into the hole in booster.

The new Volvo brake pedal sensor is here. The other side says ATE!
Where would the o-ring seats? Or what to expect when the old one is removed?

After removing the spring-clip completely, gently wiggled and pulled a little few times. Once the o-ring became visible, it was worry free.
Clean surroundings.
When installing, place the spring-clip first over the adapter at booster. Lubricate the o-ring very lightly then slide the sensor in till it snaps in place. Pull out gently to ensure it is firmly seated.
I always disconnect battery when there is a sensor connect/disconnect - a precaution that JRL often reminds us. Thank you ALL!
