2007 S80 Front end suspension clunk

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Post by ninefiveone »

My S80 has a intermittent front end clunk I have worked all the TSB's and its still present, its more noticeable when the weather is cold outside under 50 degrees.

I had something similar once-upon-a-time

turned out to be a bad upper spring seat

The upper spring seat is a common issue. Also check the upper strut bolt (under the hood) is well tight. The torsion bar end links are also known to fail and get noisy.

The P3 platform models do not have the same upper spring seat and have no issues with that as a result.
The other suspects that can be noises on P2 models can also affect P3 models but usually at much higher mileage. Check the upper strut bearing plate, the sway car connector links, and see if there is any indication of the subframe mounts moving in subframe (even though the TSB's have been done).

When does it do the clunk?

Really need to know when it chunks. For example does it clunk on one side only?

Sorry it took so long to respond Im a newbie hopefully Im doing this right. I have had new struts installed the sway bar ends checked out. The noise happens on both sides usually just going up or down a driveway at slow speeds it does not make the clunk all the time that what makes hard to find. The ambient temperature seems to have a lot do with it in the summer the clunk pretty much disappears when the weather turns cold it reappears. Thanks hope this answers the questions presented

My dad had a temperature related clunk. Turned out to be his spring seats. Always use the XC90 spring seats - they are beefier.

That is a known issue with early P3's when the front suspension is twisted. One side will get loaded and the other side gets unloaded when you turn off the street into a raised driveway. It is related to the subframe mount bushings. Who worked on the car and performed the TSB fixes?

The P2 S80 (99-06) does share the spring seats with 2003-2014 XC90.
The 2007-> S80 uses a different strut design with a different spring seat and strut bearing design.

I have a independent Volvo shop I deal with I have built a trusting relationship with the shop they are also stumped by the clunk. I have some questions to run by them on Monday I'll keep you posted.
