2002 V70XC AT w/geartronic - shift flare occasionally

Post by Wes Rule »

I'm a First time user. Having shift and flare occasionally on 170K mi V70XC and have been reasearching various Fixes. So far a reman valve body with sonnax parts Is the Pick. There is an issue that has me Guessing and that is : there is No noted difference in Valve bodies on Regular or Geartronic AW55-50sn Transmissions which leads me to the Question of whether there is a Physical difference at all? Is the difference in the Gear selector and software? Can a regular gearbox be installed in a Geartronic car and work? If this is not so What is the difference?
Also whats the difference(parts wise) in FWD and AWD boxes?

This is my fourth Volvo ,P1800,142,242 in the long ago past. The V70XC is the Nicest car I"ve ever owned.

Thanks for your considered Responses, WWR

Does it flare when you shift at WOT?

It could be your torque converter doing its thing when you shift under light throttle and low RPM.

Push the car deeper into the RPM with more gas and see if it happens.

You have good info at 170k your shift flare could be helped with a valvebody rebuild as for your question on what's different geartronic wise all xc's came with geartronic... now you cant swap a Front wheel drive trans with an AWD trans there is a physical difference in the output coupler...

Thanks" Integrity" looks like a vb will get done mid Jan/Feb.
AS TO the difference in the Boxes themselves the question still stands.

Doing a valve body or solenoid exchange is at the front of the transmission, so it should not matter if it is fwd or awd. I've had good luck with replacing the linear solenoids with rostra solenoids, adding an inline magnefine filter, new fluid, and importantly the shift adaptation procedure. Before doing this, the flares were really bad.

No difference between Geartronic and non Geratronic except for control systems. The shifter simply has a gate with 2 switch contacts whose signal is picked up by TCM and converted to shift commands. All transmissioms have a noted position for Geartronic actuation whether Geartronic hardware is fitted or not.

However valve bodies from non Geartronic to Geartronic are unlikely to be swappable unless you look up VINs on both vehicles on Vida and determine if they are the same number. There are at least 3 or 4 different valve body part numbers that must be researched before proceeding. Also any 2002 valve body will likely have an "A" letter stamped on it if from a early to Mid 2002 build vehicle. If purchasing a valve body from Reamman or VBX you are required to determine what this letter is before proceeding.

If you intend to mix and match from donor vehicles I suggest investing in at least downloading a copy of a VM Ware image of Vida from MVS.

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
