S70 Radio Questions - New Owner

Post by vawils »

I am a new owner of 98 S70 - love the car so far. First time I drove the car at night I noted there are no lights on the buttons on the radio - aren't there supposed to be? Only light was on the display which worked fine but otherwise couldn't see any of the controls.

Also I am going to replace the radio anyway since I want one with a CD - still trying to figure out the codes etc. If I take the radio out and replace it with a non-volvo radio as from cirsuit city I assume I don't have to worry about the codes anyway right? Except if I wanted to reuse the volvo radio. I have a code (found in the owners manual) for the existing radio but not sure it is right since I saw in the records the used car dealer (non volvo) gave me that they had to have the radio replaced.

I noticed some volvo radios on ebay with cd's etc. that looked good. Is it really that easy to get the codes from a volvo dealer? Are there other good places to get replacement volvo radios?

Sorry for all the questions but any help on these radio questions is much appreciated. This forum looks great.

SC-816 (like in my S70) will fit your car and it adds the CD to the radio and cassette...will work great. Just make sure you get one with a code if you buy one off of eBay, or really from anyone.

Also, be aware that the code Volvo give you may not work ...

See the code work before you part with cash!!!

I was given the same code by a local Volvo Dealer, Volvo UK Customer Support, and the dealer I bought the car from.

Everyone agrees its right, just a shame it doesn't work.

The code is 4 digits long, between 1 and 6, gives 1296 possible combinations.

The rub is once you've put in the wrong code 3 times, you have to leave the radio at least 2 hours, turned on, before you can have another go.
(I've ended up hooking mine to a 12V battery in the house, so I don't have to leave the car, unlocked, on the street, with a key in the ignition!!!!!)

Well, I now know one code is wrong (the one given me) so ...

Hope this thread gives you some help:

There should be a serial number for the radio on the radio itself. Dealer should be able to look that up. Also, sometimes people write the 4 digit code on the radio itself with a sharpie, so look for that. If all else fails, there is a service on eBay that you can buy that evidently retrieves the code from the radio itself. Either that, or upgrade like I mentioned earlier to a different one.
