1998 S90 Oil leak

Post by anbran1 »

I replaced an ignition coil (#5) last week. I noticed an oil leak coming from the area where the coils are and specifically area of #5 and back to the rear of the engine a few days later...

I could not find a source of the leak (nothing around the oil filler cap)

Then I noticed I'd forgotten to put a bolt where the coil attaches to the cam/valve cover. This bolt appears to be part of the 40 some odd bolts that secure the cam/valve cover to the head (10mm).

There is no oil in the spark plug "silo"...

Is it possible that oil would seep out of that open bolt hole?

Very possible. Sometimes when a valve cover gasket is put on, between the bolt holes and the where oil is, isnt sealed. Its the area on the outside of the bolt hole that is sealled. Also if the hole is drilled through to where oil is, if the bolt threads dont have some sealant on them, crankcase pressure can also push oil through the threads. Thats not as common though. Being that the bolt wasnt installed, its extreamly possible that is where the oil is comin from. Now that the bolt is back in clean the area very well with a degreaser and keep an eye on it. My favorite cleaner is "Awsome" found at dollar stores. Get the concentrated version though. Works awsome.
