97 960 Transmission Slips Completely After a Few Seconds

Post by joe cool »

1997 960 Sedan 175K Miles Automatic (VIN YV1KS960XV1113948)

Problem 1.

Start up cold, drive for up to a minute with no problems.

Then transmission slips in all gears (like driving a stick with the clutch in).

Shut off, then start up again.

Transmission works fine for 5-15 seconds (depends on how long it has been off) then slips again in all gears.

Problem 2.

I have been chasing documentation all over the internet, but I can't seem to get a straight answer about the diagnostic capabilities of this particular car.

It says it is OBII compatible (on a sticker inside a kick panel), and I can read some codes from the connector (I have a ELM327 code reader interfaced to my laptop), but no transmission codes. Supposedly, they are generated by some 960's but not all.

I would appreciate any insight and/or suggestions you might have.

Thank you for your consideration.

(I am going to post this on the Tool and Codereader Forum, also.)
