Hey guys, i finally finished up a 1998 V70 i purchased a few months ago. It had a burned valve on #4, i had a new valve put in all valves machined, plus head milled by machine shop. I also replaced timing belt, water pump, pcv system and most all of the hoses connecting to everything. Around 430 am this morning, i finalially got it to fire up, purged fuel line, then cranked for two 30 second intervals to ensure oil system was primed, then hooked coil it. It fired right up, didnt even stall out and idled beautifully around 900rpm even at 18*F.
Anyway when i started it up i had a solid check engine light, a tracs light, ABS light, and Orange Arrow. I had removed and re-soldered the ABS unit when was working on all of this, i though i broke it but, that acutally went away as soon as i drove it. The problem is the solid check engine light persists. I have double checked all connectors, fluid levels, vacuum line, i have an Autel scan tool, it shows no stored or pending codes. I can view all live data, o2 sensor info, tps, rpm, ect, all of that data, but i cannot get the check engine light to go off and have never seen a single code since it was started up.
Is it possible this scanner just isnt picking up the codes? i picked up misfire on #4 before i did the work, maf when i unhooked it before. I dont know whyt he CEL is on now though. I did notice a prety heavy oil leak at the rear, it was there before, i believe its one of those 3 plates on the block since it only leaks under boost, not high rpm or reving, i have the new gaskets im just waiting for it to cool down to put them on, and i ordered the lower turbo oil return line. The PCV can and block hole were completely clogged and a cam seal had popped out initially so maybed it damaged those seals.
I am really not sure what could be causing it. I did hook back up some things that were disconnected when i drove and purchased the car before repairs. The large 5/8" hard plastic tube for what i believe is the AIR was disonnected at the turbo end, i hooked that back up, the fresh air connection to the turbo solenoid was not hooked to the nipple, i hooked that up, the small vacuum line for the fuel pressure regulator vent was cut, i hooked that back up to one of the vacuum ports on the throttle body, im not sure that was correct but i couldnt find a place for it.
Any ideas on what i should do? I have disconnected the battery, i have told scanner to reset codes, it doesnt even go away then comback immediately with scanner reset. I'm out of ideas on the CEL.

It feels great after a major teardown to have the engine fire right up on the first try - congratulations!
It sounds like you have a decent scan tool and I haven't heard of any problems that illuminate the CEL without there being an associated code. Volvo's are kinda famous for setting a code that doesn't trip the CEL if it is minor.
About the only thing I can think of is that perhaps a wire from the ECU to the instrument cluster got pinched.
It would be an interesting experiment to intentionally set a code by doing something like unplugging the MAF sensor and then see if you can get whatever other error is lurking back there to appear.

I had a check engine light on my 98 R after a top end rebuild that was a transmission code, though both OBDII bluetooth via Torque and an Autel MS509 wouldn't clear it or read it.
Once I hooked up a Vol FCR cable I found it and zapped it away. That was a great feeling as the car was new to me and I didn't really want a tranny AND engine rebuild.

Thanks Mike and Lee, i will be checking over all wiring again when i go back out there. I'm going to replace the 3 oil cover plate gaskets at rear of engine, then ill start unplugging things with car running to make sure i can get codes to trip individally. I was just curious, is there no MAP sensor for these cars? Or does that turbo solenoid act as the map? I can pull live data i believe and see if anyone seens anything out of the ordinary. I did leave car in neutral with key jammed in ingition during the hole process so i could move car around, maybe the NSBU switch has an issue, though it shifted fine through all of the gears, or mabe it threw some code with the transmission when it was powered down in neutral, and powered back up in neutral. I am not sure.

Shawn is going to get this figured out on Saturday when his Vag-com cable shows up and he gets Vol-fcr running.
AL519 won't read trans codes. I bought the AL619 last month to try out and it won't read trans codes either. I ended up sending it back and I'll stick with my old but precious EU702.

That's disappointing regarding the newer Autel products and their new Volvo weaknesses, Matty.
The EU 702s are still available through some AliExpress resellers for cheap $$.
They apparently lack Win 7 support (according to the customers I have sold them to ) yet they have almost all that's needed for any Volvo owner and if you don't want to load other car maker files.

EU 702 on Amazon right now for under $140 shipped, a decent price:

Is the $80 EU 702 from ALiExpress a trusted purchase? That's a *great* price.

They list at $68USD plus shipping at Shenzhen Zuess. Guess it's because they are almost obsolete.
I've sold about 10-12 of them with one faulty and they honoured the return.

I might buy another eu702 as a backup. I've used mine about 2000 times if I had to guess. I'd be screwed without it.
The al619 only does abs, SRS and obd. The interface is too slow as you have to manually enter the cars info. The eu702 has a very basic interface but is blazing fast compared to the al619

Matt, thank you so much for all of your help! I got my cable today, using a month old computer with windows 8.1, all software installed fine once i enabled windows 8 to display file extentions to change it, I then installed the software, connected the $10 blue Amazon cord, windows 8 automatically installed a driver for it, i went into my device settings, saw it was set for com port 3, i went into properties, changed that to 1, it didnt connect to car, restarted computer and it worked. I found a MAF code when connecting to the motronic 4.4 i assume is the engine - this code wasnt there before i had forgotten to plug it back it when i removed air box to check all connections.Matty Moo wrote:Shawn is going to get this figured out on Saturday when his Vag-com cable shows up and he gets Vol-fcr running.

I cleared that DTC, connected to the aw50-42, no codes there, the other two i couldnt connect to i asumed becuase they were diesel or an awd transmission model or something. The SRS i found no codes. the ABS, i found a few for wheel speed sensors etc, but that was all working fine, i cleared them, I found some codes for the ECC, about compressor low pressure etc, i just recharged system and its held over night, has just over 5psi when i initially connected the freon gauges but the car had sat for some time before i purchased it so i assumed it just leaked out from not running. i couldnt connect to any of the other units because i dont beleive i have them.
I started the car back up, and check engine light was off. I am not sure what caused it at all though. The MAF definitely wasnt causing it that was something i did after and my Autel picks that up. The only thing i did between the time i parked it and now was i connected two of the ground straps to the top of the head - i knew i'd left them disconnected, but the CEL existed even after doing that, then the car sat over night after i had changed the 3 rear oil plate gaskets and i RTV'd the oil retun line connecting to block. I know thats not a fix, but i will be able to see easier where the oil comes from if it moves the RTV, though i dont think it will, i used Three Bond 1184, which sticks to anything and holds up like nothing else. I used that to seal cam cover too. I have ordered the seal kit for the turbo line, but its a week plus out still.
The one thing i noticed is the service light is on now when the engine is runing. I let it run for 5 minutes or so and it wouldnt go out. I tried to reset it with the car off but it wouldnt work it says connection failed. This light was not on before i connected this cable setup. How can i reset it if not with this cord? The car is the pre 126000 serial so it uses the 158 tooth timing belt and hydraulic tensioner, 7mm valve seals etc - yep i learned that all the hard way haha. I took pictures of the other codes for the systems to see if any come back.
I currently have the key on position 2 with the battery charger connected and will go check on it in 2 hours. its displaying off, and has since i purchased the car, i pulled radio and found a 4 digit code written on the label so i assume thats the correct one.
