1994 850 won't start when warm

Post by truprice »

This is slightly different that other "won't start when warm" descriptions. This one won't even try to start when warm. Starts instantly if cold or hot, but when when just warm, nothing happens at all. Doesn't crank over, just a slightly audible click. Have to wait a half hour. Any ideas?

My guess would be a bad starter. The starter gets just as hot as the engine as the engine runs. Based on the fact that it clicks it would indicate that the solenoid is getting power.

Still it seems odd: once the engine is hot, it starts perfectly. (Thanks for the response!)

It indeed does sound odd and that may not be it at all but it is all I can think of.

Your problem isn't a "typical" Volvo problem like most Volvo problems are. Starters and solenoids tend to get hit or miss as they die and I had a starter that I knew was going bad get more problematic as the summer temperatures got hotter.

I finally changed it after my wife had to crawl under the car at her office with a hammer to smack the starter and drive home. She was, of course, wearing a dress that day and she wasn't happy.

Problem solved (wouldn't start when warm, fine if cold or hot).

Believe it or not: bad bearing in the air conditioner.
Disconnected the pulley & it was okay.
Air conditioner assembly now has been replaced for a week, and it is cured. (after over a year of never starting when warm)

Thanks for being there -
Truman
