2000 V40 won't shift out of park

I installed the Grom Usb3 into my car tonight. When I put everything back together the gear selector won't shift out of park. I'm not sure what to do. There is a clicking noise under the steering column when I push the gear shift button. I took off the panel for the steering column and see a cable that goes in where the ignition is. This cable is just push into a slot. There is nothing locking it in. What should I look at first?
Also the shift lock override button does nothing. It won't override either. The brake lights come on when I press the brake pedal. I think it's something in the steering column.
Please help.
