Having exhausted my time on the internet trying to find answers, I decided to post this on forum.

How many of you with awd Volvo's have had issue with Bevel gears? I'm on my third in as many cars and I can not beleive that either Volvo or and outside company isn't either providing replacement parts for these units to be rebuilt, or that Volvo or someone hasn't stepped up to the plate and started remaning them and selling them. I asked a Volvo parts person why they were charging a $200.00 core when there isn't anyone rebuilding them. He couldn't give me an answer. Is it that they just want to make an extra buck, or do they ship them back to Volvo and they use what's good and sell as new? What are your thoughts???

Remove the driveshaft, convert the car into FWD.
Problem solved.

They are not overly complicated to rebuild . I use an off road shop to rebuild them as it is essentially a differential. Any local shop that repairs diffs could do it. We don't see failures from many 2004's - most failures, in my experience, are from lack of fluid or low quality fluid.
