hi all .
im fairly new to the forum so apologies if this has been covered before.
im pretty sure the time has come for a new flywheel /clutch replacement as mines started to rattle although not constantly . it tends to ease if i blip the throttle a bit .
what im looking for is a garage in the birmingham area that has a good recommendation for this work . an idea of cost as a guide would be good too .
any input on this would be very much appreciated

Im considering salvaging one if it turns out to be the duel mass but from what I've researched the only way to find out is to take the gearbox off and take a look, I might be wrong (please correct me anyone if I am).
Can I ask does your rattle get quieter at all once the car has warmed up at all? Mine does and idle or pulling away the rattle dissappears after 1500-2000 rpm ish.

Mine got replaced about 2 years ago when the core plug went pop and all of the engine oil disappeared....luckily I was just 100 yards from home when it happened. Mine is a diesel....but it might be worth getting the core plug behind the flywheel done at the same time. The indy I used took great pleasure in telling me it was a £2 part....but the gearbox would need to be removed to do the fix....think it was about £1,500 in total which included doing the clutch/flywheel (I was already paying for the labour to change the core plug!!) - from memory I think he said the old plugs are plastic and there is an upgraded metal plug available!
Belskee....1500-2000 rpm I believe is also the point where the vacuum mounts on my diesel change damping.....might be worth checking those if you have them. I also had the same issue with my mounts recently....I rules out the DMF as it had already been done.
Thanks I've never come across vacuum mounts so a new one on me, do you know if these are fitted to petrol models as I can't find any info on these type of mounts for models other than a d5 and nothing mentioned in the haynes, should mention mine is a t5.
On another note these last few weeks I'm having symptoms that do seem to point to clutch or a duel mass problem, judders sometimes pulling away, engine breaking in 2nd gear will slow down to a point then almost kicks or surges forward, is most noticeable in 2nd, along with the rattle its all pointing to something pricey going wrong.

Hi belskee...I also had to change a set of the mounts recently too. You can tell if they are vacuum mounts by looking at the front mount...on top there will be a vacuum tube coming out and going to a small box on the side of the air filter. You can test the mounts with a vacuum tool...the bad ones don't hold a vacuum.
Well from what you're saying im sure I don't have these types of mounts, my front mount just has a piece of cable wire looping over it nothing that looks like a vacuum hose, I've been listening to this rattle for some time now and is at its worse from cold start then almost disappears as the thermostat opens.
I'll be replacing the water pump soon as it could well be that but failing this im don't know what else could cause it, could it be valve related? Though I'd imagine a valve issue would really affect running, cheers for the input on the mounts though, jim
