1998 V70XC stalled while idling

Post by 850 LPT »

Hi everyone,
My car just stalled while idling for about 15mins. in a parking lot. All of a sudden the rpm started fluctuating a little, and then it quit. At that time the CEL, trans. arrow, ABS and TRACS lights were on.

It started right back up again and the lights were all out. Drove back to work and everything seemed normal.

Do any of you guys know what this could be?

Thanks, Dirk

Could be either the ABS sensor which surprisingly can seriously affect the way the engine performs or the ETM - electronic throttle module. Rebuilt ABS sensors are reasonably priced and often have a very long guarantee on them. If you have the necessary torx driver and the will to do it it can be done in your driveway. I had to do one about 4 years ago and had the ETM done by the dealer last year. The dealer charged me $814.00 for the ETM. My guess is that it is probably the ABS sensor.

I never would have thought that a bad ABS sensor could cause stalling  .

My car does not have an ETM, only 99' and up have that. But I was wondering if a faulty MAF could cause this?

Is this the first time? Or does this happen often.
It could be what I suspect to be a cracked, leaking link in the Evap system on my identical vehicle.

I also came up with a Barometric sensor error.
I haven't yet dug into the XC, but it starts and runs then stalls out. Pretty much what my '96 wagon did when I bought it.
At that time I had found a broken Evap hose at the roll over valve, but I swapped the MAF and front O2 sensors which may have helped.
The '96 did not have that extra MAP/Barometric sensor at the fender.

I'll figure that all out when I get to it.

This was the first time it happened. EVAP is ALL new, so I would really be surprised if there was anything wrong with it. Plus, wouldn't a fault in the EVAP throw a code fairly quickly?

I drove the car home after work (40 miles) on backroads, and it ran as smooth as ever, still no CEL. I'll just watch and see, but it bugs me not to know what caused this.

Will a '98 store codes? A later car would "keep a record" of what happened for VIDA.

Also potential ignition switch, electrical part. Have you replaced that on your car??

Looks like you will be home for a few days this week

Hi Steve, yes we will have some digging to do out of this one

As far the ignition switch, I do not think that has been replaced. Good suggestion. And I did not check for codes, but maybe I should. The CEL is out and everything behaves normal, so I didn't think to check.

Thanks all,

Dirk
