2001 Volvo S80 engine system service required

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2001 Volvo S80 engine system service required

Post by russellvolvos80 »

I have a 2001 volvo S80 2.9 that gives intermittent message "engine system service required" on the dashboard. It comes up sometimes every few days , weeks or even over a month. It goes away without I doing anything and then will just pops up again. I use my maxiscan OB2 scanner i purchase for the car but it never find any code. Recently i erase it with the scanner but a day later it's back. Any idea as to how to approach this problem? Last year I replaced the coil pack, plugs and clean the MAF when this message was coming up then it disappear for a long time. It runs great other than a few months back i had problem with the cruise control not engaging and a check brake light message. The engine throttle fine and there is no malfunction from what I notice. I have replaced the brake pedal switch and it's being great since. My engine oil looks a little dark so I may change it this weekend. Anything you can share here with me on the history of this problem?

I'm almost certain that the S80s will report the Volvo error code by pressing in the READ button on the stalk while there is an error.

Otherwise you will need a Vida/Dice setup on a Windows laptop to accurately read this car.

It just display the message "engine system service required" on pressing the read button. There is no code. when I rotate the circular part on the stalk it will display I have one message then pressing the button display the message only. I have the Autel maxiscan but it reads no code. I am just wondering if there are any regular problem that may possible contribute the message.

Which Maxiscan model are you using? Most of them can't delve into Volvo ECUs apart from the EU702 or MD801 series.

The MS 509 isn't powerful enough to read every sensor output from Volvos.

It was actially my first scanner and I still have it in the toolbox but as far as Volvos are concerned it will only read about 80% of engine faults on post 98 vehicles. It doesn't do SRS or ABS properly either.

The newer 619 series looks promising but has let one of our senior members down and he still swears by his EU702.

The Maxiscan EU702 works for me - it can capture and save live data too if you're keen!

I am willing to invest in a good code reader for this car as it runs great and I love it. Any code reader recommended? Maxiscan EU702, Vida/dice or any other?

I didn't hate it, it just wasn't for me. I need to plug it in and get to what I need to see quickly. The AL is too slow to get started. I think most people would love it because of the interface, but that isn't important to me. Some days I might use it 30+ times when I'm testing modules and I don't want to wait for the scanner when I'm trying to keep things moving.

Matty I thought you mentioned that the AL619 didn't handle SRS very well or was I thinking of some other scanner?
