1996 850 Time to Replace Struts/Shocks?

Post by jonesboy1983 »

My 1996 850 has 135,000 miles. I don't believe the struts or shocks have ever been replaced so I am wondering if they are due? The problem is I don't really know how to tell if I need new ones. It definitely drives harsher than my 2007 V70 but I don't know if that is just because that is a smoother riding car. I've tried doing the bounce tests but it seems fine from this. However I have read that's not really a reliable test. Is there some other way to tell if I need new struts or, at this age, should I just assume they are due. Thanks.

While I don't know of a great test, I am going to go out on a limb here and say you'll notice a dramatic improvement in ride if you replace your existing, nineteen year old suspension with quality parts.

If your 2007 V70 rides better than the 850, your shocks need replacement in my opinion!

I haven't owned a P2 V70, but do own a 2006 P2 XC70 with adjustable shocks. I have to say it rides a lot harsher than any of my older Volvos even with good shocks on it. My 93 850 we owned was the best handling of any Volvo I have owned and also a dream to drive with comfortable suspension. Our 98 V70 XC also road nicely (both cars benefitting from 15" wheels with larger sidewalls). My current 2000 V70 R runs on 17" wheel and is noticeably harsher on the road in-spite of having the same shocks as the 98 V70 XC.

I think by replacing the shocks with a good quality unit (you will see many suggestions, my preference is Bilstein Tourings, but for a FWD there is now a kit from Koni called the FSD, and if I owned a FWD I would probably try those as they claim better comfort and handling, but they are pricey).

Neil.

I use the Bilstein Tourings and love them.
