AM Dead but FM and CD Player Fine

Post by hwodin »

I have a 2008 S80 and the AM band is not working at all (FM and CD player are fine) and have been told I need to purchase a new radio for about $900.

Does anyone know the best way to proceed, (other than doing nothing).

Can it be repaired? Should I buy a used replacement? Should I buy an aftermarket radio? I'd like to stick to OEM but don't want to pay the $900.

Please advise.

AM goes dead in most of this vintage (early-mid 2000s) radios made by Mitsubishi Electric across various makes that use them (not just Volvo). I came across a reference at some while ago that explained it's due to a failed transistor somewhere in the tuner section (AM section doesn't power up, silent/no static even at full volume). Someday I'll figure this out. AM is out on mine too ('06 HU-650). I don't use AM often, but once in awhile for news/traffic.
