1995 855 Manual Climate Control Issue

Post by lcc014 »

The manual climate control in my 1995 855 was not able to change air direction to "full" windshield. In other words, the air direction knob (big one in the center of MCC unit) was not able to be turned to 12 o'clock position. It was stuck. Other positions were fine. It was fine last night but not this morning. Yesterday, we had 1 foot of snow in Boston on top of 3 feet last week. This morning was in deep freeze : 5 F and wind chill down to -10F. I drove my car to work (about 45 minutes), still not able to turn big knob in the center to full windshield position.

Could it be the MCC unit itself or linkage issue that get stuck ?

Thanks.

Usually it is the damper flap that gets stuck. Don't force it or you can break the mechanism behind the knob and changing the control unit is a bear. You can get to the damper flaps by removing the lower dash panels, I think the damper for the defrost is on the driver's side and I think it is the one that is the higher of the two above the floorboard. I haven't had to mess with mine in seven or eight years so my memory is fuzzy.

They typically un-stick if you twist the lever that the cable goes to a little bit.

Thank you for the information. That is great. However, can you describe what is the damper flap look like. I have the driver side lower dash panel off due to the broken plastic screw holes on the dash panel edge. Will I see the linkage/cable from the side (driver side) of the control unit ?

Thanks.

They are on the side of the main climate unit, more or less just above the accelerator pedal, and they have cables that are like bicycle brake cables that move the levers. The levers themselves are about 1" long I think. I found this description from the service manual:

Page 3 has an illustration.
