1999 S80 Key Fob Remote Control

I purchased a used 1999 S80 that came with two keys and a fob. The previous owner said the fob worked but it doesn't. Does anyone know if I can tell whether the fob that I have is the right one for my car? I know there are different numbers on the back of the fobs. Or doesn't it matter at all and the dealership can program any fob to the car as long as I pay the fee and software download costs.
