2002 V70 Front wheel bearing

Post by mouseskowitz »

Finally found out that the noise coming from the front end is the driver side wheel bearing going bad. From what I'm seeing the Volvo bearing only has a 1 year warranty and the kit runs about $190, or the Raybestos bearing has a 3 year warranty for $90. The only problem I see with just getting the bearing is that I can't find the seal and bolts on their own. Can anyone point me in the right direction for those parts, I'm sure they cost a lot less than $100.

curious how you determined which bearing was bad?

I have a 2007 xc 70 that has developed a "hum" similar to snow tires that is likely a wheel bearing.

noise does not change by turning right or left.

You can still go with a used one off Ebay, if you can trust it's OEM and the seller is checking it for running perfectly smooth. As for the bolts, Volvo doesn't sell them separately? The small seal ring I transferred it from the older bearing.

To check a bearing, there is only one way: the brake caliper as well as the brake disk need to be removed, then the bearing is turned by hand to feel for roughness (a little bit of roughness can be tolerated for a while, but there should be no play at all).

Tire noise must be eliminated before suspecting a bearing. Tires can get noisier if old or deflated.

As far as how I found out, I have a wobbly hum that is speed related and gets slightly worse on a curve, right hand worse than left I think. It's been there for quite a while and I thought it was the tires that I had on a different vehicle for a while since some of them weren't worn evenly. Over the last month the noise has been getting worse to the point that my wife asked about it. Now that I'm working full time instead of going to school full time I could afford to go in and get new tires put on. Initially they said that everything was good to go. But when I drove away I still had the exact same noise. I took it back and after a test drive and a fair amount of time digging into it they said it was the bearing.

I think I'll go with this bearing. It's one of the popular parts on Rockauto, but Amazon has it cheaper and I can get free shipping.

After some digging I found the part numbers for the rest of the kit which I found at Tasca for $20 plus shipping. Here are the Volvo part numbers if you're interested.
HUB ASSY SEAL Part Number: 9492980 1 each
SEMS SCREW Part Number: 985466 4 each
AXLE BOLT Part Number: 30640878 1 each

Doing this way it's $100 cheaper (only $115.75 to my door) than the Volvo kit and I have a 3 year warranty instead of only 1.

I drove my 1999 with a growler for almost one year 10k miles before replacing it.

On disassembly it had no play and was almost identical in feel to the new FAG bearing, so diagnosis by feel us very tough IMHO.
