Well, I blew the serpentine belt on the way home last night. Took a cab for a new belt. So here I am in a cold driveway. The car is a non-turbo 2004 V70. Having read all of the posts I could, I understand a 14mm socket will release the tensioner. Unfortunately, there appears to be a plastic cap over the 14mm bolt.Try as I may, due to small space, I cannot get the cap off. Any suggestions? Should I just get a long screwdriver and a BFH (the BFH gives me away as a member of the Quattro List).

Sorry for the misdirection. After reading more posts I find that the tension is released with a T55 Torx bit. Temp is now down to 10F, I hope for better weather tomorrow, the belt cannot easily be twisted into position.

Factory actually uses a T60 though a 55 will not slip either. The 14mm bolt people speak of may actually be a T30 on some tensioners. Using the torx key allows the belt to slip onto the pulley without fouling the belt path.

Last pulley to slip the belt over is power steering.

I don't know for the 2004 non turbo, but on my 2003 non turbo it's only a 14mm to be pulled towards the front of the car, no torx.

You need to put away the power steering reservoir and the coolant reservoir - this last one, important to disconnect the underneath sensor plug near the reservoir because the sensor wiring is very sensible. With the two reservoirs away, there is enough place. the plastic cover pops easily with a flat screw driver, just kick it on the side. definitely put an extension bar on the ratchet while releasing the tensioner. it needs to be fully released or the belt will hard to slip back on the p/s pulley. good idea to check the a/c and the alternator pulleys while there for smooth running.

While I got it done, but it produced a new problem. I must have done something to interfere with the "fly by wire". The car starts and idles, but there is absolutely no throttle response and the car cannot be driven.

I would remove the upper and lower cover off the timing belt (two clips and two torx on top, and a 10mm screw on the side), and check see if the upper and lower marks for the timing belt are still aligned. The fixed lower mark for the crank pulley can't be seen but it can be felt by touch on top left of the 'n' shaped metal piece near the crank pulley, Snapping a serpentine causes issues sometimes with the timing belt. Try not running the engine again until the tb marks are checked fine.

Good thinking. A few years back I snapped a serpentine belt and simultaneously (?) broke the timing belt. The serpentine belt had wrapped itself around the crank pulley, I assume that was causative. That motor was trash and is the reason I now have this Volvo.

There is nothing apparent here. As I said, it revs normally and quietly until I step on the brakle.
