1997 Volvo S70 T5 - Whining noise in 1st gear

Hey to all. My Volvo has an automatic transmission and about a year ago it began whining in 1st. The moment it changes into 2nd,the noise goes away. A year ago the agents recommended i replace the whole gearbox with a new one, saying my present one wont last.
Was the gear oil changed you may ask..........I honestly don't ever remember changing it.

For starters, how about doing a few drain and fills of the automatic transmission fluid right now? Could cure the whine. You won't know until you try it.

Well it lasted a year, hasn't it?

I would do three drain fills over the next 6 months then drive it. At this point, you may as well drive it until it breaks, I can't imagine you can source a used transmission there
