Always a hot Internet topic, but there was a pretty good piece of work on this from Penn State in 2009

For those looking for a simple decision tree on severe vs normal service, they document that under 5 mile trips AND under 25C is the crossover where water is not removed from engine oil on a regular basis.

Doubling the short trip to 10 miles (private communication) seems to remove fuel and water even in winter conditions.

I've found the best benefit to eliminating the 5 mile trips is it gets me on my bike
