Perhaps member Precopster could also add to the discussion.. I remember there was such question, didn't seem that feasible. 2003 transmissions and up also have some issues if the fluid was never replaced (or was replaced only later on), particularly with the 2-3 rough up-shifting

What is wrong with your tranny? Are you sure your valve body is not the issue? Rough 2-3 shifting is valve body. Sometimes the tranny problem is the B4 Servo breaking, I have seen this. I would not remove the tranny until you know the valve body is not the issue. Check my other posts for more info. I have 191k now on my tranny and it shifts fine after I rebuilt my valve body 5k ago. Unless you have an actual mechanical failure or extremely worn clutch discs - the tranny will go 300k before the discs fail due to wear.
As far as a tranny swap it should work but you may have to update the software and most likely do an adaptation as the 03 valve body, the electrical part, will differ. I am guessing now, but my 01 XC70 had a "no mark" valve body, and an 03 will have an A, B or maybe C. These handle pressure differently so the shift points will differ - why you need an adaptation at least.
Were it me, and I was not sure the tranny or valve body was the issue - I would pull the valve body and take a look. In the end you have to take out many of the same items so it will not be too big a waste of time. The TransGo SK AW55-50 shift kit is around $100, B4 Servo $40 and tranny fluid will have you out under $250.00 - you can always use these items on the swapped tranny - only wasting the tranny fluid.
