Buddy called me and noted he thinks he has antifreeze in coolant and/or oil in coolant tank...nothing to bad yet...car runs fine.
My experience is 95.7% this is a head gasket issue and that is based on VW 1.8L and many many Saabs...of the 4 Volvos I've owned never had a head problem.
Sounds like a head problem to you guys or are there any other possibilities that are unique to Volvo?

Could be condensation in the oil. This time of year, my cars develop a lot of glop in the pcv system. In any case, you can test for exhaust gas in the coolant with a test analyzer and fluid. I think you an borrow the equipment at Advance and purchase the fluid. Prob $10 or so. Good luck.

on 99 and later Volvos with oil to water oil coolers, the oil cooler is the most likely cause. The oil supply hole on white motors is next to head bolt but not very close to coolant passage. The head gasket would leak externally in most cases.
Easy to test for. remove hoses from oil cooler and connect to each other and then see if oil comes out of oil cooler after it run for a while.

Thanks Jimmy...always great intel. I won't get to Vida until some time this weekend to look things up in detail for him. So I have a few more lazy questions.
What do you mean by "white motors"? I have not heard that phrase before tonight.
Where is the oil cooler in these, never tripped over it. Is it in the radiator like many trans coolers thus needing to replace the radiator assembly?

OK...cancel my own request. Had time to google and found a good HOW TO on another forum...
Won't mention the name of that site but have included the solution for those that find my post.
