2000 V70 Non-Turbo - Rough Idle - New Plugs/ETM

Post by Bigscrb15 »

Ok, here's the issue. My 2000 Volvo V70 is idling rough. It has high miles and sat for some time (1.5yrs). I decided to get it back on the road recently. It was sitting because the ETM was shot. I ordered a new ETM and replaced all the plugs. I also added some fuel additive to the 1/2 tank of gas. Now when it starts it revs by itself and then levels off to a rough idle. When driving its only rough on idle. Drives ok but I don't feel comfortable driving it yet. The ETM came from the same model/software version V70 with much lower miles. Anyhow I know there are a lot of variables but what do you feel the most probable cause is? Bad gas? Bad ETM? Bad MAF(recently cleaned)?

Here is a video of it starting... Ignore the wild animal(my children) sounds toward the end. Also that is me advancing the throttle toward the end.

Is the ETS light on? I couldn't tell from the video (add some coolant though :D ).

Bad gas can cause the rough idle but it typically won't cause the engine to race at startup. There is a ECU re-learning time involved when major systems get changed and that, along with bad gas, could explain a lot of it. If the ETS light is on then there is a problem, software compatibility or otherwise, with the module - it is tough to tell without a VIDA/DICE scan. Was the replacement module a yellow sticker version?

Lol... Heater core is leaking! ETS light is not on. Looks like I should try to completely drain fuel and refill with fresh. I'm guessing the Florida heat didn't help the fuel over the past 1.5yrs. New and old ETM were both yellow sticker.

When I need to drain the fuel tank I take the Schrader valve out of the end of the fuel rail and hose clamp on a piece of fuel line to run to gas cans. I then jump the socket positions on the fuel pump relay (pins 15 & 87) and let the fuel pump do the work for me. You can turn the fuel pump on and off with the key as you need to change gas cans.

I bought a V70XC that had been parked for over a year and it ran terrible until I got rid of most of the old fuel and topped it off with fresh gas. No ETS light is a good sign.
