I just bought a 2001 s60 t5 and I dont know if the ETM was fixed or not, but what Im wondering is will I be covered under the extended warranty that covers the ETM even though Im not the original owner?
Thanks,
Do Volvo warranties transfer with ownership?
Yes, I am the second owner and my dealer told me I am "eligible" for a ETM replacement but they have to go trough a long procedure including the cleaning of the throttle body (you pay for this) and in the end, they will change ETM for free within 10 years /200000k.

Supposed you live in Canada or USA, around 150$ cdn. Don't do it yourself(not that difficult to clean) cause you may expect resistance in changing your ETM for free. They will also upgrade your software at the same time for free. This is supposed to extend the life of the throttle body and avoid unwanted signals from the unit.

Hi, I'm the guru on this site so I guess I need to set the record straight.grovesj2 wrote:I just bought a 2001 s60 t5 and I dont know if the ETM was fixed or not, but what Im wondering is will I be covered under the extended warranty that covers the ETM even though Im not the original owner?
Thanks,
You are covered if you paid for repairs whether you are the original, second, third or upmteenth owner. If you paid, you are covered. If you are no longer a owner you are still entitled to a refund. Your dealer can give you copies of the repair order. The one gotcha, it's only for US and Canada. There are groups being formed in the UK and Australia.
The 'letter' says "Repairs or replacements required based on the diagnosis and which are a result of an Electronic Throttle System failure will be covered by this extended warranty and performed at no charge." I see no words that exclude cleaning the ETM. See Http://vexedvolvo.org #
# The ETM Refund Letter. You might take a copy of the letter to the dealer and show him it includes both repairs and replacement.
You DO NOT have to wait for the letter. Just send copies of your repair orders into the address in the ETM Refund Letter.
For the details the Service Manager has see 'Troubleshooting' for all of the documents.
There is also a class action law suit that is extending past California.
Hopefully this hepls you out so you help us out. Send complaints to the National Highway Transportain Safety Administration, The Center for Auto Safety, and Volvo. They are all listed on the FAQ page.
If you are an engineer we are looking on ways to build a retrofit for the ETM that will eliminate the problem. On the 'Very Technical' page are some of my ideas.
If you have any contacts at TV stations, radio trouble shooter, newspapers or widely circulated magazines, see if you can get a the story out.
Register with me as I send out periodic news ( I use Bcc so no one see your address). Let me know the year, model, mileage and the city and state.

Thank you Don for this precision.
So do we need to accumulate the repairs until ETM fails, or we can send them our invoice each time we have a repair related to ETM?(with no ETS light I mean)
I 'm an electronic technician, I have experience in Microchip PIC(microcontroller) so if I can be of any help......
I'm sure though that Volvo have a solution;maybe it would be too expensive. But one of these days, other manufacturers will sell a better one, good for the rest of the life of the car. This day will be after the warranty probably.
Alain.

Lisha,
This section of the forum is concerned with the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) which was found on '99-'01 Volvo's. I don't believe your car has this. My apologies if I'm wrong.
