1996 850 base Flooding after a few minutes

Post by m-k-white850 »

I have a 1996 850 base model. The car had been sitting in my garage for about a year. Shortly after I started driving it again it began to flood out. I replaced the plugs and it runs fine for 10-20 mins then it begins to sputter and flood. If I clean up or replace the plugs it will run fine and then die shortly afterward. There is good spark in all 5 cylinders and the car is not throwing any codes or lights. I am not sure where to start?

So do you mean the plugs are getting soaked in fuel, and if you dry them out it runs just fine?

It is so rare for a fuel injected engine to flood except at startup, I wonder if something else is going on, especially something electrical that would show when the engine heats up. Maybe a bad fuel pump relay and actually the engine is starved for fuel? This forum has seen bad coils that give a visible spark but it is too weak to run the car. Those are just examples although the relay is super common, especially for a 96.

You likely have a dirty injector that is stuck open. If you can get it to run long enough you can usually listen to the injector by using a long screwdriver, touching the end of the screwdriver to contact the injector and the other end to your ear. Injectors should have a solid sounding, sharp, click and a stuck injector will sound dull. You can readily hear the difference with a dirty injector.

One other potential problem is a bad fuel pressure regulator that has the diaphragm ruptured. You can remove the vacuum line from the regulator and it should be dry. If it is wet with fuel then the regulator is bad and it sucks raw fuel into the intake manifold.

Based on statistics here, I would guess FPR >> stuck fuel injector in probability

And one stuck injector is not likely to cause the whole engine to flood out as described (I think?) in the original post. And one stuck injector should give codes for a misfire in one cylinder, etc.
