1998 V70 T5 Water Pump Date Stamp

Post by charleskennedy23 »

I have a new to me V70 that was purchased with 115,500 miles on the odometer. I have no service records on the timing belt and there is no label on the cover to indicate when the belt was done. Upon inspection, belt looked like it was in great condition and the water pump looked brand new. I went looking for the date stamp and found that it is a genuine Volvo pump with a date stamp that has a 12 on top with a 4 below. Was that pump manufactured in 04/2012 or is it a 12/2004 pump? My guess is the pump is 04/2012. Anyone know the answer to this question?

thank you
charles

In either case you would not know how many miles the pump has. I would do the belt gear and the pump to be on the safe side.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

typically the date stamp is a circle with 1 through 12 and the year in the middle of circle.

Charles..snap a picture so we can get this right.

Replacement interval on the 1998 is 70k, so if it was done on schedule you are 20k from a new one.

On edit - refers to TB, not water pump.

70k is a mighty conservative interval for a genuine Volvo water pump, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to go to 140k.

Right on that on Erik.

Post edited - 70k is Timing belt interval, not water pump interval. I believe Volvo recommendation is every other TB change, so 140k?

Volvo does NOT recommend water pump replacement unless it is leaking. Mine failed at 20 years and 257,000 miles. It was leaking real bad and the belt was hanging off of it. I call that failed. LOL

I only change water pumps if they are 10 years old or leaking. The date stamp is YEAR/Month. Old water pumps have missing cogs, never ones do not.
