98 V70 NA interior air conditioner noises

Post by 98v70dad »

Now that warm weather is here in the South I've been using my air conditioner. It works but it makes a lot of weird pneumatic like noises including whines and moans and sounds like air running through pipes all coming from behind the HVAC control panel INSIDE the car. The sounds sometimes cycle. Sometimes the sounds happen and sometimes they don't.

I've never owned a car that made these odd sounds especially since the a/c seems to cool OK, although it isn't really that hot outside yet. I know absolutely nothing about the air conditioning system and have considered taking it in to get it looked over and serviced. It was last serviced about 2 years ago.

However, maybe the sounds are coming from some pneumatically actuated controls for where the air is being directed (valves and dampers, etc) and if its something like that I think I could fix it.

Can anyone give me an idea about what might be going on?

I had strange noises from the ECC system in the 98 V70 XC we owned. Just before selling it decided to have another go at trying to find the cause. Identified I had a bad servo motor that continually tried to reset itself and made weird noises. Real pain to get into (had to be the one at the back on the RH side) and took a long time and lots of engineering words of encouragement to swap out. Strange noises then disappeared and all was good. Sold the car before anything else broke!

The AC ducts are electrically controlled on ECC cars, and they do talk to you even when they are working correctly. Sometimes I just lie under the dash and watch all the little motors work and marvel at them.

The temp on your AC is controlled by an air blend door that changes the mix of AC air with heated air, so that motor is always working when your AC is on.
