IAC Valve - ETM - Dice Vida etc

Post by andybbrown »

I just found out that the ETM controls my idle, in answer to a question I asked about where the IAC was on my car.
However, I get OBD2 codes for IAC which I just erase with reader but is annoying doing that.
Anyone know any more specific of what controls the ETM IAC? I will install deice vida soon. I wonder if that can get me access?

There really isn't a part in the throttle module that acts as the IAC valve, it is all in the software and its behavior is controlled by the ECU. VIDA/DICE will let you do some diagnostic work on the ETM but that is limited to observing its behavior, there aren't any user defined settings that you can adjust even with VIDA/DICE.

What is the specific OBD-II P code number? It may be that your scanner is misinterpreting the actual P code and pointing you in the wrong direction. For the real basic stuff Volvo follows the OBD-II definitions but when you get to the edges, stuff that isn't there on all cars, Volvo codes can differ from other standards on what the code means.

Andybrown which motor do you have ? Turbo or non turbo? If non turbo there is a circuit for idle control just above the intake hose with a grey connector.

Vida/Dice will get you much closer to a result with a 1999-2000 model than a generic scanner. Last night I was reading a 1999 V70 and my Autel MS509 gave a P1005. After giving up on the Autel I cranked up my laptop and Vida had a stored code for the ECT. No amount of searching yielded a definite result for P1005.

Andy,
The ETM actually does the IAC job by letting some air through at idle, and adjusting that amount just like the IAC used to do. Before drive by wire, at idle the throttle would be fully closed and the IAC would bypass and regulate some air needed for idle.
