2008-ish XC90 or XC70?

Post by matthew1 »

A friend has his heart set on a V8 XC90. From reading jimmy57's and others' posts here about the durability of the P3 XC70 (2008+), I mentioned he should look at that also.

Any thoughts on this? I'll direct him to this thread.

How many people in the family? If it will be used for road trips, camping etc as well as city, I would definitely go for the xc90. It is definitely the ultimate all around family vehicle. I would try to convince him for the more proven 2.5t model though.

thanks Matt for starting the thread, so far I'm really happy with it. I was a little hesitant about the color at first and after three days I love it.

I looked at the 2.5, but I wanted a 2007 or newer to get the updated interior. Aside from the 2005 counter balance shaft issue, I've found a lot of good things about the Yamaha made v8, and it got 24mpg driving from the springs to Denver so no complaints.

I have noticed it wanting to pull to the left when I hit the brakes at speed and after some research it sounds like it might be worn control arm bushings. I'm comfortable working on most vehicles but I'm going to take it in and have a more experienced set of eyes give it a once over. Does any one have a recommendations for Volvo shops in the Denver area? I'm heard good things about Volvo specialist and Voltek, anyone have experience with either?

New to the forum and first time Volvo owner, so thanks for the time and I welcome any other advice/tips you might have

I think those are your two options, besides https://www.facebook.com/swedishmotorsinc, which is in Boulder.

Then of course there is McDonald Volvo (eh) and Rickenbaugh (better).

And on the opposite end of the spectrum, there are freelance ex-Volvo dealer mechanics out there. My dad used to have work done by one, who did repairs in his home's garage. That guy had to keep volume down because commercial work without all the permits is disallowed. For these guys I'd look on CL and check their referrals, etc. Homework.

Congrats dannonnicks on the purchase of your xc90. Did you rule out brakes as a possibility of the pull. I had bad control arm bushings on mine but it never pulled but you never know. Any knocking sounds over bumps or wandering on the highway?

I just did the control arms on mine. My bushings were shot and if definitely pulled to the left and right. It didn't wander on the highway or anything, but did knock over bumps.

My sister has a 2008 XC90 and her Reduced Engine Performance warning light has come on twice and she has lost power. It happened to me driving on I-75 this last Saturday.

Is Volvo still having issues with the ETM's? Is anyone else out there having this problem in Volvo's after the 2002 model?
