2000 V70 Motorhome - Flat towing / 4 wheels on the ground

Hi Hi,

I'm trying to find out if anyone has towed a V70 FWD Auto with all 4 wheels on the ground ?

We've just bought a Winnebago motor-home and are trying to find the easiest options to bring the V70 with us.

I've looked into the dolly towing, but think the 4 down / flat towing would be easyier to hook up and disconnect etc.. and no dolly to store.

It can't be towed wheels on the ground.
The auto trans would have no lube and it would harm it.
There is a small list of cars that can be towed wheels down. These either have an axle driven lube pump or they have a clutch far enough in that the only things spinning will get splash lubed.
Some old 4 wd trucks, like a Bronco II can be towed as they have a transfer case that can go into neutral and the transmission is not turning when rolling.

There is a slim chance that one of the companies making electric lube pumps that used to be used on rwd cars for this purpose may have a listing for that Volvo. The last time I researched I did not find P2's on any of those company's websites.

- The owner's manual says (engine off, car in neutral): 20 miles max.

- If you have 2 people then, one drives the car separately.

- If you are alone and need to tow the Volvo:
a. You can remove the axles but you risk ATF spilling out of the trans during the journey. So if you remove the axles, then tape both openings carefully.
b. This is just a "crazy" thought: alternating back and forth.
- Engine off: tow for about 15-20 miles. Stop the Winnebago motorhome, start the Volvo engine (leave the trans in neutral) and leave it on, drive the Winnebago motorhome for about 5 miles ---> during this process the Volvo trans is lubricated by the pump. After 5 miles, stop the the Winnebago motorhome, turn the Volvo off (to save gasoline).
- Repeat the sequence. This will be a PITA b/c you have to stop and go for the entire journey...

Years ago we used "towing hubs" which bolted on the inside of the rear wheels to flat tow a race car to the track. The hubs would free wheel so that nothing turned except the tires. I have no idea if something like this exists in a Volvo lug pattern. Probably not likely but worth a search.

Or get a dolly from uhaul, if that's an option.
