'99 S70 Base -- ETM Removal Tips?

Any tips for removing the ETM without either pulling the starter or intake manifold? I have the electrical connector disconnected, but it appears to be trapped behind the starter. VADIS suggests removing the intake manifold, but there has to be a better way to get the electrical cord free. Any thoughts/tips?

Hi Evan,

Sorry missed your question earlier. On your NA it shouldn't be too difficult. On my turbo it is a pain because of the turbo feed pipe from the intercooler. What I would suggest would be to remove the cooling fan from the back of the radiator, and that should give you a lot more room. You may still have to loosen the starter motor to get the wire out from behind it, but with more room to see and work with the fan housing out the way you may get away without loosening the starter.

Starter BRACKET ONLY. Removing intake manifold will still leave it stuck behind the starter. All here:

Thanks, Mike. I viewed your video before posting, but since you had already freed the wire on your used ETM, I didn't find it too helpful. Nonetheless, I've changed a couple starters, so I know the bolts of which you speak. I already have the 12 MM one free, guess I'll just have to work on getting the 2 10 MMs out. Hopefully, it will all become clear to me by then. Thanks for responding.

I saw the starter bracket and know where it is. What is unclear from the video is once you remove the bracket whether the plug for the ETM can just be swung around front and clear of the starter.

GOT IT. Removed the 10 mm nuts holding the starter bracket on, pulled the bracket out and swung the electrical connector out. Curious that VADIS would recommend removing the intake manifold to do this. I got the bracket and electrical connector out without removing the fan shroud with only minor knuckle scraping, but that's from somebody who changes starters without removing the fan shroud. . .

The end plug of the ETM is larger than the gap between the starter and the block. Once the starter bracket is removed the cable is freed because there is nothing trapping it there.

Volvo routed it there so the ETM wiring conduit can be burned out faster from the heat of the block. :mrgreen:
