1999 S70 T5 - Markings on oil pump gears?

Why do the gears inside the oil pump have markings on them? Gears are symmetric so it shouldn't matter how the small gear sits in the bigger one?? Does anyone have deeper knowledge about this, I would really like to know.

Perhaps it is marking inside and outside faces of the gears ??

Front crank seal was leaking so I replaced seal, pump gasket and pump o-ring. Opened up the pump because I wanted to see if there was oil sludge in there but it was pretty clean.
