2000 v70 Still pinging

Post by famfeld »

Hi. I used 93 octane, but now that the weather is hot now, I am again experiencing "pinging" when accelerating. I tested the pcv valve and it appears to not be clogged. What would be my next step. I do have 215K miles on the car and burn a quart or so of oil every 3K, but everything seems fine. What would be my next steps for figuring this out or solving the problem?

Thanks,

-Feld

Quart of oil every 3k is nothing.Quart of oil every 1k is upper limit of oil consumption. What oil viscosity do you use?At 215k it should be time for thicker oil like 10w-40.
What codes are stored in ecu?

Is it light pinging only on hard acceleration or does it sound like egg shells breaking?

Probably ok if light.

Run a top-end cleaner through your motor. Carbon deposits on cylinders/valves can make for all kinds of nasty knock.

Pinging can be caused when coil pack(s),ignition leads, map sensor begining to fail. Also when it's time for new spark plugs or old one needs to be re-gapped and when there is vacuum leak.

Since these 20v cars don't have a map sensor,i would check remaining stuff from the list.

The top engine is running too hot. Hard to pinpoint the reason, one thing that helps is to remove the plastic cover over the coil packs and try a different gas station. Is the fuel filter clean? I too have it sometimes in the summer, my PCV is clean. I suspect some gas stations don't have proper 93 fuel

Second on carbon due to miles and burning oil. Combustion chamber cleaning. Most efficient is steam or water injection.

Oragex,

Once I get to the coils then what. Right now I have the covers to replace the plugs. Should I try a cooler thermostat? Strange thing is that when I got the car it had no heat because thermostat was making car run really cool. It still did ping some originally, but maybe that was not a coincidence. I have since put in a new thermostat to get good heat. I may try putting in a cooler rated one.

It shouldn't ping with the current thermostat - it didn't when new. I doubt it is a coil pack either honestly. Ping is a result of pre ignition due to low grade fuel, improper timing, or heat ("hot spots" or wrong heat range spark plugs").

I did 2 cans of seafoam, then changed the oil. It seems to have helped. I am going to keep running fuel injection cleaner, since I have had good luck solving other cars' pinging problems in the past this way. So is it fair to assume 93 octane is the only fuel my V70 will run on?

Thanks for all the help
