S40 timing belt walking

Post by tommd »

2000 S40 timing belt is not centered on the cam toothed gears. It is just flush with the outer edge and 1/16 off maybe idler. Belt, idler, and tensioner are all volvo and have 25,000 miles, car 116,000 miles. Idler pointer within spec. Do I have a problem? What?

When i changed my TB on a 2003 S40 the TB rode right on the inside edge of the cams, maybe just a hair off the edge. Tension was spot on... I was told this was normal as long as nothing was rubbing. 15k miles later and its still fine, and still rides in the same spot.

Start the car up with the upper TB cover off and manually rev the engine to make sure its not walking further off of the cams / idler at high RPM's. If not I wouldn't worry about it.

You may remove the upper cover and push (use fingers) the belt to the center of the two cam gears. It should stay there.
