I've been frustrated by the lack of a functioning (and cheap) code reader for those of us who neither have the under-hood boxes nor the plug-and-play functionality of later cars, and decided to do something about it.
So I came up with this today (like I said, heavily inspired by Ben850's amazing gadget): This thing (if I did it right) will plug into the OBD II port, and flash codes out the top (only had "ultra blue" LEDs on hand, but blue is nice, I guess...). I usually do before I think, so it's rough and will thus only read ECU codes from the #3 pin... so far. But it should be able to show me why I'm getting the intermittent Lambda/CEL-light. I think.
Next step is already under way - I've ordered up some parts from here and there, and with some stuff I've got on hand already, I should be able to make a plug-in flashing LED style reader that will cater to all 4 pins - 3, 6, 12 and 13, if I remember correctly. Please correct me if I'm wrong - it would make a good deal of difference, me thinks.
I'll update when the parts come in - and if my limited soldering- and technical skill can make my plan come to life. In the mean time, a couple more pics.
