Need help please S60 2003

Post by Irhuma79 »

My car is been giving me few signs recently. Sometimes in the morning especially when I drove it for few minutes and then park and reverse, starting to shake with the RPM going up and down. I turn it off and on then everything went fine. Also I have previous problem with the MAF and each time such problem happened I use my personal scanner and delete the code. Now I was driving and stopped at the traffic lights. The car engine stopped by itself. Tried to run again no luck. I put yhe scanner but nothing showed on, did erased the nothing (sometime erase the no code helped) but again the car engine fail to catch and when it does its almost there the car is shaking forever and never stay on. Battery went flat after all trials. Called AA and with the use of battery jumping doesn't help to start the car. Nothing shows on my personal scanner? Could it be the fuel pump (as the previous signs usually comes with a fuel smell). When the battery jumping is on the car cannot catch the start and the engine is craying forever but never start. Please any advices !

How many km on the car? First thing, don't crank to start it for longer than 10 seconds at a time. Or the starter will burn. Let it cool 1 min. then try again.

The easiest thing to do is to get a pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail while cranking.

Since you smell fuel I'd think engine gets enough of it, but you can pull a plug to confirm if wet. Does your scanner read live data, you could read fuel pressure? If fuel delivery turns out to be okay, I'd look at plugs to make sure gap is good, crank sensor connector to be clean. See if you could get a set of live data with scanner and post here, there's a lot of detail in there.

My mechanic said the pressure in the fuel pump is almost none and suspect fuel pump failure. He uses a very professional scanner and picked up this diagnosis from the reading. What bothers me is the following message that I saw on my dashboard screen (Anti-Skid is Temporarily off)? The mechanic said its a false call since the battery is flat. Will replace the fuel pump and will see what will happen. My car's milage is 160K

Also test your battery, alternator and all the cables.
If any are bad or going bad this can cause havoc with your systems

Get your battery charged and then measure the fuel pressure yourself to confirm. I wouldn't trust a mechanic who pulls a code and doesn't know to measure fuel pressure to confirm. S/he will ask you to replace a 200-300 USD part with 4-5 hours labor - for that kind of coin you should confirm the diagnosis.

There is a recall on the fuel pump. Perhaps you can get the dealer to replace for free. Also has the fuel filter every been replaced. If your replacing the fuel pump you might want to replace the filter.

Well. The battery is to be changed, as I had few terrible experience when its gone flat. The guys at the battery centre did checked and recommend changing the battery if it wents flat again (test shows only 4 cells out of 6 are actually functioning). I had the fuel filter changed on 150K (now its 162K). Unfortunately don't have time to sort this myself (doctor and working 6/7) and have no options but to relay on this mechanic. Will see what will happen after replacing the pump and battery.

Also, as mentioned don't forget to have the mechanic test the alternator for good charge, these are known to have issues. A bad alternator will damage the battery. Being there, it would be a good idea to inspect the alternator and A/C compressor pulleys for turning smoothly.

Well. The good news is that: it was the fuel pumo. The mechanic did replaced both the faulty fuel pump and the weak battery and the car is back on road.
