2003 S80 - Should I buy the Volvo as my first car?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2003 S80 - Should I buy the Volvo as my first car?

Post by vishwavikas26 »

Need some advice on whether to buy a used 2003 Volvo S80 2.9. Mileage - 76k. This would be my first car. Please let me know how are the maintenance issues and reliability with this car. Thanks.

I would invest in a good inspection by someone who knows these cars, looking at front suspension, engine, codes and the other usual suspects. This is a low mileage car, and if in good shape now should be very dependable. Routine maintenance can be done by yourself which is fun and you get to 'know' the vehicle. Or of course have it done at a Volvo specialist or the dealer.

pull the trigger if the inspection comes up good

you will love it...very comfortable
won't jump off the line, but when it gets moving, is quite dandy
at it's best when cruising at highway speeds...smooth as butter

Good to know. I've been thinking about one for a while as well. Only I'm more in the market for a T6.

Only do it if you have another car to drive and like to tinker

We've had our 2003 T6 for 5 years and 60K miles and so far (touch wood) the only thing I've had to fix on it that's not a standard wear-and-tear item (such as shocks and other suspension components) was the passenger drive shaft, and even that could be considered a normal maintenance item. Can mow has 100K miles on it, drives like a train and has been the most dependable car I've owned to date. Close second is our 2002 C70. So I don't believe a second car is needed as back-up. But do make sure the history of the car is known and maintenance has been done as required,

My 2004 S80 is my first car too, and I love it. Very smooth ride. I've only had two minor issues: Brake control module plus ABS onents had to be replaced, and a connector plug that connects to my throttle body had poor connectivity and had to be replaced.
Other than that (plus regular maintenance and a gradual steps toward stage 0), it's a good car maintenance wise.
