1994 855 parts interchange

Post by FLXC90 »

Hi. acquired crashed 94 855 from parts counter guy I use. eng and trans are good, front structure junk, air bags deployed etc... My question comes from mulling some possible projects off craigslist

Specifically, I read a couple threads on the 94 trans into later 850s and '98 70s what I found indicates should be no problem going to VSS on ABS car...right?

Engine... Long-block good to swap to up to '98 70 series (N/A) to (N/A)?

suspension is 5-lug, common to later? Like my 98 S70 that shakes, rattles, and rolls?

Thanks for info
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I'll need to double check but I believe the later model transmissions (96+) used a second input speed sensor that is post torque converter that isn't there on the earlier transmissions. My '94 has a 5 speed so I haven't had a real chance to compare the early and late automatics first hand. The transmissions are specific to turbo and N/A cars as well and you can't mix and match.

As far as the VSS goes the TCU will continue to get the speed information from the ABS module and the VSS on the transaxle wouldn't do anything except fill the hole.

Thanks Erik; Lee; I was reading in VRD, but a couple of (old) threads I tried to follow here and over to VS ended in 404 errors. So I appreciate any more info on 94 to newer transmission swaps.
